Backyard Barn Owls
Greetings from CaliforniaCONTACT US
Greetings from Fallbrook in Southern California. I'm Bert Kersey and that's my wife Sharon with Barney the stuffed owl, borrowed from our local school. We first encountered barn owls ten years ago when a local tree and bird expert recommended putting up an owl box for gopher control in our yard. It worked (!) and we've had owls ever since.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. Will lights bother our barn owls?
A. Not much. Half of our video was shot at night, with big floodlights lighting our owl box and tree. We were cautious at first, but now we just flip on the lights and watch the show.

Q. Are barn owls monogamous?
A. Yes, like many birds they mate for life, and we're pretty sure we're seeing the same pair (the co-stars of Backyard Barn Owls) in our owl box for the third year in a row.

Q. Do barn owls "Hoooo?"
A. Never. They get your attention with a long raspy screee-eeech.
And an occasional chirpy click-click-click.

Barn Owls at Night Q. Will a barn owl carry off my cat?
A. No. A 10-lb. cat is way too big for a 1-lb. barn owl to mess with.

Q. Shouldn't my owl box have a perch?
A. The down side of a perch is that it could invite intruders to drop by for a visit. We like a perch, however, because it gets the young adults out of the box (photo) and acts as a stage for more barn owl action!
